Building on the momentum of its 200th hotel opening in Canada during 2025, Hilton continues to grow after adding more than 15 new properties to its Canadian portfolio last year.

“Canada remains an important market for Hilton, supported by a diverse mix of business, leisure and group travellers,” Hilton's senior director of development Jeff Cury wrote in an email interview with RENX about the company’s growth and the domestic hotel market.

“We’re excited by the breadth of opportunity across the country – from major urban centres to high‑growth leisure markets — where Hilton’s broad portfolio is well-suited to meet evolving guest expectations.”

Hilton is a global hospitality company with a portfolio of 27 brands comprising more than 9,100 properties and 1.3 million rooms in 143 countries and territories.

The company has nearly doubled its footprint in Canada over the past decade and is continuing to aggressively grow its portfolio.

Extended stay, focused service and lifestyle hotels

Hilton has more than 100 projects in various stages of development across Canada. Much of that activity is centred around extended stay and focused service brands. The focused service segment alone represents approximately half of Hilton’s growth across the country, while extended stay has doubled in size over the past decade.

Recent additions across those two portfolios include Home2 Suites by Hilton Woodstock in Ontario, Tru by Hilton Montreal centre-ville and Hampton Inn by Hilton Calgary Downtown

One of the company’s newest focused service brands, Spark by Hilton, debuted in Canada in 2024 with Spark by Hilton Toronto Markham. The brand has since seen significant growth, with close to 10 Spark hotels now open nationwide.

“We’re also gaining traction in the lifestyle space, with new hotels opening in key markets from Montreal to Niagara Falls, including several Tapestry Collection by Hilton properties that debuted in 2025,” Cury wrote.

“From a market perspective, we remain active in major gateway cities – including Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal – while also leaning into high‑growth leisure and secondary markets where the right brand can meaningfully elevate the local hotel offering.

“Our recent and planned growth reflects that balance, with continued expansion across Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec, and a cadence of openings across multiple brand categories.”

15 new properties to open this year

Hilton expects to open approximately 15 properties this year, including several Spark by Hilton hotels. Hampton Inn by Hilton Montreal East Anjou and Le Parc Gatineau, Tapestry Collection by Hilton have recently opened.

Looking further into the future, the 16-storey, 193-room Tempo by Hilton Toronto Airport is expected to open at 5900 Elmbank Rd. in Mississauga in 2029. It will be owned and developed by Mississauga-based Inspiration Group, which signed a franchise agreement with Hilton, and will be Canada’s first Tempo by Hilton.

In addition to development, Cury said Hilton is constantly reviewing the marketplace for acquisition opportunities.

“Hilton’s continued growth in Canada is centred on supporting owner performance through a strong in‑market team, the strength of Hilton’s commercial engine and a multi‑brand approach,” Cury concluded.

“With opportunities across gateway cities, secondary markets and leisure destinations, we see Canada as an important growth market well-suited to a diverse mix of product types.”

Staffing changes

Hilton has appointed Mark Kochhar as director of franchise development for Canada. He'll oversee development efforts across Western Canada, working closely with owners and partners to advance new hotel projects and support the continued expansion of Hilton’s portfolio in the region.

Originally from Vancouver and now based in Toronto, Kochhar has more than 13 years of experience with Hilton and three decades in the hospitality industry. He previously served as director of owner relations for Hilton in Canada and was general manager of the former Hilton Garden Inn Toronto City Centre before that.

Christopher La Vine, senior analyst for development in Canada, also recently joined the Hilton team to support development activity with market analysis and pipeline management.
