The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) has elevated its former chief operating officer Brenda Buchanan to CEO, ending a months-long search after Michael Beard retired from the position in February.
Buchanan was the interim CEO from February to July, and served as COO of the non-profit for six years. She is described as having over 20 years of experience in the Ontario regulatory environment.
"I am honoured to continue to lead the RECO team as we build on our momentum as a consumer-focused, forward-looking and technology-enabled regulator," Buchanan said in the announcement.
"I'm excited to deepen our collaboration with the Ontario government, and our stakeholders, as we work together to support the real estate profession and ensure strong consumer protection."
Based in Toronto, RECO regulates and enforces the law for real estate agents and brokerages across Ontario.
It is well known for the RECO Information Guide, which advises homebuyers and sellers when working with real estate agents.
Buchanan's background
As COO of RECO, Buchanan led the strategic and business planning process, plus accountability for a wide variety of functions such as stakeholder relations, finance and accounting, information technology and human resources.
A former family, child and youth worker, she was the director of human resources and vice-president of administration and chief governance officer at the Canada Lands Company for over two years.
Then she held roles as vice-president of administration and customer services, and human resources and training, for over 12 years at the Technical Standards and Safety Authority. The authority is Ontario’s public safety regulator for fuels and mechanical equipment such as ski lifts, boilers and pressure vessels.
Buchanan’s appointment “marks an exciting chapter for RECO as we embrace change and reimagine the future of real estate regulation in Ontario,” said Katie Steinfeld, chair of RECO's board.
