Shindico celebrates 50 years of success
Shindico, one of Manitoba’s most prominent real estate firms, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Founded in 1975 by Sandy Shindleman, the company has grown from a small brokerage in Portage la Prairie into a leader in commercial real estate. Its success is driven by strategic growth and innovation, but its longevity is rooted in strong relationships.
From local brokerage to industry leader
What began in Portage la Prairie has grown into one of Manitoba's largest locally owned commercial real estate companies. At the age of 18 Sandy Shindleman became a licensed broker, investing in and managing properties. Recognizing the need to expand his expertise, he moved to Winnipeg in 1975, pursuing education at the University of Manitoba and the CCIM Institute.
Sandy’s leadership and active involvement were key drivers of Shindico’s growth. He saw potential in underutilized properties, transforming them into thriving commercial spaces. Over the decades, Shindico has developed, managed, and leased millions of square feet across Canada, setting the standard for innovation and quality in commercial real estate. With a portfolio spanning retail, office, industrial, and multi-family sectors, the company continues to grow, driven by its commitment to opportunity and excellence.
Even as the company has expanded, Shindico has always believed that real estate is about people and the relationships you build. By nurturing long-term connections with tenants, business partners, and the communities they serve, Shindico has ensured sustainable and meaningful expansion.
The three R’s: Relationships, relationships, relationships
In real estate, the well-known mantra is "Location, Location, Location." But for Shindico, success has always been about "Relationships, Relationships, Relationships." From the beginning, the company built its reputation on trust, long-term partnerships, and collaboration—values that continue to guide its work today.
“We wouldn’t be here without the incredible people who have been part of this journey,” says Sandy Shindleman, Founder and Chairman. “Our clients, our partners, and most of all, our team—Shindico’s success is a reflection of their dedication and hard work.”
Many employees have built decades-long careers within the company, a testament to Shindico’s culture of respect, opportunity, and professional growth. By fostering a workplace that encourages mentorship, professional development, and long-term career growth, the company ensures that its people grow alongside the business.
Succeeding by helping others succeed
Shindico’s motto "Succeeding by Helping Others Succeed" has been the foundation of its business model. Whether helping businesses find the perfect space, creating environments where tenants can thrive, or investing in communities, the company believes its success is directly linked to the success of others. As Alex Akman, Chief Operating Officer, says, “Shindico thrives by supporting others and by creating lasting relationships with tenants and employees alike.”
For Shindico, success isn’t measured by deals alone, but by the strong, lasting connections they build along the way. Shindico’s approach is grounded in truly understanding clients and tenants, partnering closely on solutions, and earning trust through long-term consistency. This people-first mindset is what sets the company apart and makes its work so rewarding.
Recognizing the people who made 50 years possible
That spirit of collaboration and shared success has been instrumental in reaching this milestone. Shindico’s 50th anniversary is not just a celebration of years in business—it’s a reflection of the people who made it possible. From trusted partners and loyal tenants to dedicated employees, each relationship has helped shape the company’s journey.
“We are incredibly grateful for our team and our partners,” says Robert Shindleman, Executive Vice President at Shindico. “Their trust and dedication have made all the difference. This milestone is as much theirs as it is ours.”
Shindico’s commitment to Manitoba
Shindico’s contributions to Manitoba extend far beyond commercial real estate. With over 7,000 people working in Shindico developments, the company has made a significant impact on the province’s economy, contributing $1.2 billion. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, Shindico continues to support the growth and energy of Winnipeg and its surrounding areas.
In addition to its economic impact, Shindico, along with the Shindleman family, has supported numerous charitable causes throughout the years. Their ongoing efforts to give back reflect a deep belief in creating lasting, positive change within the community. By staying connected to local businesses and organizations, they continue to play a meaningful role in shaping Manitoba’s future and driving positive change.
Looking to the future
As Shindico celebrates five decades of success, the company is more excited than ever about the future. Focused on sustainable, forward-thinking developments, Shindico is committed to creating innovative spaces that reflect the values that have defined its journey.
One of the projects Shindico is most excited about is the Water Tower District—a 165-acre mixed-use development that includes multi-family, retail, office, parklands, and industrial spaces. Designed for walkability and accessibility, it allows residents to live, work, shop, dine, and stay active within their community.
SNR Construction, Shindico’s construction division, has many exciting projects lined up for the year. As demand for high-quality developments continues to grow, SNR is expanding its team to deliver on these projects. The company is also enhancing its office space to accommodate its expanding workforce, ensuring continued excellence in every project.
“We’re proud of where we’ve come from, but we’re even more excited about what’s ahead,” says Sandy Shindleman. “Our relationships will continue to drive our success, just as they always have.”
